NEXT MEETING NOVEMBER 6th

Hello Lakeland Writers!

Last week was a busy one for the Florida Writers Association.  On Thursday, the Florida Writers Foundation, the charity arm of the FWA, hosted their featured writer Vic DiGenti who presented the Workshop “How to Write Killer Fiction.”

On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the FWA held their annual convention at the Lake Mary Orlando Marriott.  This three day event was a basketful of creativity where writers in every genre imaginable came together to discuss the craft of writing.  Seasoned veterans and newbies discussed projects and ideas, enjoyed fine meals, and listened to key note speaker and NY Times Best Selling author (and FWA member) Julie Compton.

One of the great advantages of belonging to FWA is the Royal Palm Literary Award.  The RPLA is unique among writing competitions in that it is not only about recognizing winners but also about providing valuable feedback to all entrants. No other competition we know guarantees that at least three judges will read and thoroughly comment on the entries that make the finals.

This year, RPLA judged 29 categories, including book-length nonfiction (6 genres), short nonfiction (2 genres), poetry, short fiction (2 genres), juvenile fiction (3 genres), adult book-length fiction (12 genres), Plays, and a general category for any work that does not fit into any of the others. The FWA solicited and judged separately both Published and Unpublished submissions in each category, there are 158 possible awards, including the special recognition given for Published Book of the Year and Unpublished Book of the Year.

Over the years, RPLA has remained steadfast in its philosophy, specified in the RPLA Mission Statement:

One of the advantages to belonging to FWA is the opportunity to present your individual work for review and publication in one of FWA’s anthologies.  Next year, I would love to see a few of Lakeland’s own selected as a finalist for the Royal Palm Literary Award.
