I have read a few of the monthly archive meeting agendas. I am sticking myself out there because I do not write but believe I would like to.
Do you have any suggestions on how to get started–fiction/or non-fiction.

    Thanks so much

Writing is like ice-cream, there are so many different varieties it’s difficult to know which one you might like best. I recommend that you just start.

Sure, you say, that’s sounds easy, but then you stare at the blank computer screen and only see the blinking cursor.

I recommend that you pick up a Writer’s Digest at the local book store and see what jumps out at you. Personally, I have enjoyed books like Stephen King’s On Writing and Donald Maass’s Writing the Breakout Novel.

My third suggestion is to read…a lot. When you immerse yourself in literature of all kinds, you absorb a variety of ideas and techniques. Think about what you like or don’t like about a work. Join Goodreads and write your critical opinions of each one. That’s a great way to dip your toe into the literary waters!

Of course, I recommend coming to one of our meetings! We have a variety of writers at all levels. We talk “shop”, offer each other ideas, and support our writing journeys!

Let me know if you have any other questions!
